Natalia Loaiza-Velasquez obtained her bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry from the University of Costa Rica in 2013. After a short period working in clinical diagnosis, she obtained a scholarship to pursue master studies in biomedical research at the University of Groningen. As part of her master’s degree, she spent 6 months doing research at ETH Zurich and graduated cum laude in 2016. Currently, as a third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Pediatrics of the UMCG, Natalia combines diverse research approaches based on human genetics and experimental in vivo and in vitro models to elucidate the biological function of novel genes involved in the development of metabolic disease including dyslipidemias, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis. In her free time, Natalia enjoys dancing, playing guitar, cooking, reading about popular science and learning Dutch.
