Organization

We are a group of enthusiastic PhD students from the University of Groningen, who together form the organization of the Groningen PhD Day 2021. We are working hard to ensure that all participants will have a fantastic and constructive experience at the PhD Day 2021!

Hi all! My name is Sharon Eskandar and I’m currently in the third year of my MD/PhD program on maternal immune activation during pregnancy and fetal neurodevelopment. In my spare time I love to eat, be with friends and to perform martial arts. This year, I have the honor to be the chair of the amazing board organizing the PhD Day 2021 Make it in the North. I have always been excited about organizing events, meeting new people and trying to connect them, and since the annual PhD Day Groningen is the biggest of the Netherlands, this is the place where I needed to be! I look forward to seeing you on the 4th of June!

I am Timo van Eldijk and for my PhD I am studying evolvability in the context of antibiotic resistance. I also work on paleontology from time to time. In my free time I love to go for walks in nature, play videogames, work in my garden and play music as a member of the band “The happy face spiders”. I am also slightly obsessed with insects. Anyhow, since I am responsible for the PR of the PhD day, I hope to clearly communicate our message with a bit of humor and amusement.

My name is Amber de Haan and I’m in the third year of my PhD. I am really fascinated by genetics and it is thus no surprise that my PhD is about genetics and kidney diseases.  In my free time I love to read, do ballroom and salsa dancing,  play board games, hang out with friends,  hiking and eating a whole lot of (mostly unhealthy) food. This year, I am in charge of the sponsorship of the PhD Day and I hope to involve many interesting companies for this edition of the PhD Day!

My name is Ekaterina (Katia) Dvorianinova, and I’m a PhD student studying asymmetric cell division of neural stem cells. In my spare time, I enjoy learning languages, having long walks with my friends, and drinking a cup of tea while reading a book. This year, I am in charge of the PhD Day program, making sure the content of the event is diverse and fascinating as possible!

I’m Harita Yedavally, and I’m in the last year of my PhD on using nanomedicine in the context of antimicrobial resistance. In my spare time, I love reading, sketching, and travelling (can’t wait to get back to this!). I also enjoy organizing events in different roles and this year, I’m in charge of the finances of the PhD Day, making sure our money is spent wisely to give you the best event possible!

My name is Stella Weiland and I’m in the third year of my PhD on the smoking cessation support of pregnant women in the north of the Netherlands. In my spare time I love to walk, to read books, to meet with friends and to cook and bake healthy and unhealthy food. This year, I am part of the program committee of the PhD day, doing my best to make sure that we have a diverse and appealing program for everyone!

My name is Josephine Hartung and I’m a third year PhD student working on signaling pathways in lung cancer. I love to read, I am fascinated by languages and I’ve recently started to learn how to play the cello. As part of the program committee, I am trying to make sure that as many PhD students as possible can enjoy this event.
