Prof. Roshan Cools

Relax! The optimal brain knows when to let go of effortful control

Roshan Cools is Professor of Cognitive Neuropsychiatry at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre and Principal Investigator at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior. For her work on cognitive control she won the AMMODO KNAW Award in 2017, prize assigned to internationally recognized researchers who obtained their PhD less than 15 years before.

She studies the functioning of the brain in relation to behavior: how do we motivate ourselves and how can we control our behavior? In other words, she investigates human willpower. Through examples of her own research, she will show how our behavior and motivation, even our reaction to certain brain medications, can be regulated by our brain, and how these mechanisms can vary between people.

We are very excited to have Roshan at the PhD Day 2018, visit her lecture to know more about human willpower and how this knowledge can affect our everyday life!
