09:30 – 10:00 Opening Ceremony
We have three invited speakers in our opening ceremony!
Prof. Cisca Wijmenga, the first female Rector Magnificus in the 405-year history of the University of Groningen will open this year´s PhD Day! During her opening words, she would like to emphasize that staying in academia or pursuing a career outside academia is not necessarily a lifetime decision – you can always leave or return to academia!
The university poet, Yfke Bethlehem, will contribute to the opening with a little poem about sustainability. Yfke Bethlehem is an Astronomy master’s student at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute and is currently the poet-in-residence for the academic year 2022-2023 at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. For her, there is one thing that will always be certain and that is that both Astronomy and poetry are her passions, how uncertain the rest might be.
Lastly, Carine Bloemhoff (1983), the Alderman of Groningen, will share a few words. She worked as a senior advisor at a legal and administrative service provider and has been the alderman of the municipality of Groningen since February 2019.
